Catenary maintenance railcar 704 002-5 DB

The five class 704 catenary maintenance railcars delivered between 1977 and 1978 were developed as successors to the class 701/702, based on the class 627.0/628.0 diesel railcars. These twin-engine vehicles had a top speed of 140 km/h (approx. 87 mph) and could still reach 100 km/h (approx. 62 mph) on a 5 ‰ grade while pulling a trailing load. This allowed them to reach deployment sites quickly, and their excellent technical equipment made them highly versatile. They often traveled with catenary construction cars or additional tool cars. During their more than 30 years of service, they frequently changed their home depots (Bw)—depending on the workload and duration of major construction sites on the rail network—enabling quick deployment practically anywhere in Germany.

Our prototype is the second class 704 maintenance railcar produced, which was delivered to the Karlsruhe depot on February 6, 1978. It remained there until June 1991, before being "loaned" to the Mannheim operating site until December 2002 (while still belonging to the Karlsruhe depot). After that, it changed its home depot a total of four times until it was finally retired.
