In the 1980s, the CSD and the DR decided to purchase two-system locomotives in order to simplify the ever-growing traffic and operational processes in cross-border traffic on the Berlin-Dresden-Prague route. However, the locomotive manufacturer in the GDR, LEW Hennigsdorf, was at full capacity at the time, so the Czech locomotive factory Skoda, which already had various experiences with such machines, received the order. The CSD series ES 499.1 and 499.2 were ideal as a basis. However, the German 15 kV/16⅔ Hz power system broke new ground. The double order contained 15 BR 372 locomotives for the CSD and 20 BR 230 locomotives for the DR. The universal machines were used in passenger and freight train traffic. With an hourly output of 3,260 kW, a top speed of 120 km/h is achieved. In Germany the series is lovingly called the “dumpling press”, while the Czech counterpart is called the “Bastard” in the neighboring country.
